Characterizing Censorship of Web Content Worldwide Another Look at the OpenNet Initiative Data∗

چکیده
In this study, we take another look at five years worth of Web censorship data gathered by the OpenNet Initiative in 77 countries using user-based testing with locally-relevant content. Prior to our work, this data had only been analyzed with limited automation, with a focus on what content had been blocked, rather than how blocking was carried out. In this study, we use more rigorous automation to obtain a longitudinal, global view of the technical means used for Web censorship. We also identify blocking that had been missed in prior analyses. Our results point to considerable variability in the technologies used for Web censorship, across countries, time, types of content and even across ISPs in the same country. In addition to characterizing Web censorship in countries that, thus far, have eluded technical analysis, we also discuss the implications of our observations on the design of future network measurement platforms and circumvention technologies.

متن کاملMeasuring Global Internet Filtering
In this chapter, we set out to provide an overview of the data regarding Internet filtering that the OpenNet Initiative 1 has gathered over the past year. Empirical testing for Internet blocking was carried out in forty countries in 2006. Of these forty countries, we found evidence of technical filtering in twenty-six (see table 1.1). This does not imply that only these countries filter the Int...

Over the past few years, the Internet has become a powerful means for the masses to interact, coordinate activities, and gather and disseminate information. Due to lack of publicly available information, as well as the inherent risk...

The number of countries that censor and monitor their citizens’ use of the Internet is increasing. While it is no secret that China and Iran censor the Internet, at least 25 countries, including Pakistan, Ethiopia, Thailand and Uzbekistan, also have technical filtering regimes in place. Some of the technology is even exported by western companies: search engines, blog hosting providers and emai...
متن کاملCensMon: A Web Censorship Monitor
The Internet has traditionally been the most free medium for publishing and accessing information. It is also quickly becoming the dominant medium for quick and easy access to news. It is therefore not surprising that there are significant efforts to censor certain news articles or even entire web sites. For this reason, it is paramount to try to detect what is censored and by whom. In this pap...
